The New Palestine boys swimming and diving team placed fifth in Saturday’s 11-team New Palestine sectional, tallying 181 points.
Mt. Vernon won the title with 432.5 points, besting Greenfield-Central (402), New Castle (246.5) and Richmond (209.5).
NP finished ahead of Eastern Hancock (175), Connersville (130.5), Shelbyville (125), Centerville (116), Hagerstown (107) and Richmond Seton Catholic (44).
The Dragons’ top finishers were the 200 free relay team of Ben Miesse, Chase Martin, Kyle Ellis and Jackson Schwartz, which finished second.
Schwartz had two other top-five finishes. He was fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Darrell Drake finished seventh in diving. Two other Dragons were in the championship final – Quincy Shirk was eighth in the 100 backstroke and Aidan Kingery eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
The relay team of Miesse, Ellis, Shirk and Liam Fuller finished seventh.
Placing ninth were Shirk in the 50 freestyle, Eli Kleine in the 100 backstroke and Miesse in the 200 freestyle. Finishing 10th were Miesse in the 100 freestyle and Ellis in the 100 freestyle. Chase Martin was 11th in the 100 breaststroke. Fuller placed 12th in the 100 backstroke. Ellis had a 14th-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Kingery placed 15th in the 200 IM. Finishing 16th were Martin in the 200 freestyle, Fuller in the 100 butterfly and Jack Anderson in the 500 freestyle.
