The New Palestine boys basketball team used an 11-point fourth quarter run and some timely late free throw shooting Friday to beat Mt. Vernon 75-71 at the Dragons’ den.
The Dragons led 51-46 going into the final frame and then opened the fourth with 11 straight points. Steele Brasfield opened the frame with a three-point play and followed with a basket to put NP up 56-46. Matthew Brown sandwiched two baskets around a hoop by Blaine Nunnally to push the lead to 62-46.
MV scored the next seven points to cut the lead to nine, but a pair of free throws by Nunnally and layups by Brown and Brasfield kept pushing the lead to 11. MV hit a number of late shots to close the lead, but Brown hit a pair of late free throws and Nunnally was 4-for-4 from the line in the final 30 seconds to keep the margin at multiple possessions. Nunnally hit two free throws in the final five seconds to seal the victory.
Brasfield finished with a game-high 26 points. He and Eli Stephens each scored eight first-quarter points – including two 3-pointers from each – to stake the Dragons to an 18-18 tie after one. NP outscored the Marauders 20-9 in the second quarter to build a 38-27 halftime lead, with Brasfield’s six points leading the way. Kyle Bastian added four points in the frame. MV cut the lead to 51-46 at the end of three before the Dragons pushed the advantage back to double digits early in the fourth.
In addition to Brasfield’s 26 points, Nunnally added 19 – including 11-of-13 from the line. He was 6-for-6 in the final quarter. NP was 14-of-18 from the line as a team. Brown tallied 11 points. Eli Stephens added eight, C.J. Oliver five, Bastian four and Ian Stephens two.
Ahmad Jarrard led MV with 22 points. Armon Jarrard added 15.
The Dragons are now 13-7 on the season and finish Hoosier Heritage Conference play with a 5-2 mark. They next play Saturday at Whiteland.
