New Palestine senior Grace Shanahan won the sectional championship on the balance beam, helping lead the Dragons to a second-place finish in Saturday’s Connersville sectional.
NP tallied 104.55 points, finishing runner-up in the nine-team sectional to Richmond (107.7). The top three teams advance to Saturday’s Columbus East regional. New Castle (103.7) finished third and will also move on to the regional.
Shanahan scored 9.25 points on the balance beam to win by 0.25 points. Kennedy Garrett placed third (9.0) and Addie Halter 10th (8.15).
On vault, Emma Poag was fifth (8.925), with Shanahan eighth (8.775) and Garrett 17th (8.35).
On uneven bars, Shanahan placed third (8.8), Poag seventh (8.225) and Garrett 10th (7.875).
Garrett finished third on floor exercise (9.15), with Shanahan fifth (9.075) and Halter sixth (8.975).
Shanahan finished third in the all-around with a score of 35.9, with Garrett sixth (34.375) and Poag 12th (31.875).
The regional will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at Columbus East High School.
