The New Palestine boys basketball team used a big finish Tuesday to win its second consecutive road game, beating Beech Grove 65-64.
With the Dragons trailing 62-60 late, Steele Brasfield hit a 3-pointer to give NP the edge. Beech Grove’s Jajuan Allison and Jadyn Curry hit back-to-back hoops to give the Hornets the lead at 64-63.
In the final minute, Dawson Eastes grabbed a rebound and scored on a putback to re-take the lead for the Dragons at 65-64. NP then forced a stop on BG’s final possession to seal the victory, as Brasfield grabbed the final rebound.
The victory gives the Dragons five wins in their last six games and improves the team’s mark to 8-10.
NP used a strong start, with Maximus Gizzi scoring eight first-quarter points and Blaine Nunnally five, allowing NP to jump out to a 19-15 lead. A 22-point second quarter, bolstered by Brasfield’s two 3-pointers, seven points from Gizzi and six by Roudebush, pushed the edge to 44-33 at halftime. BG rallied in the third, despite the Dragons hitting three 3-pointers, to cut the Dragons’ lead to one, and the lead see-sawed back and forth in the final quarter.
Gizzi led the way for NP with 22 opints. Nunnally added 13, including three 3-pointers. Roudebush and Brasfield each scored nine, with Brasfield draining three of the Dragons’ season-high nine 3-pointers. Eastes scored eight. Matthew Brown tallied four points.
The Dragons are back in action Thursday at home against Perry Meridian, with a 7:30 p.m. varsity tipoff. JV and freshman action begins at 6 p.m.
