Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls basketball wins on senior night

The New Palestine girls basketball team used a second-half rally to pull away to a 40-24 victory over Beech Grove Tuesday on the Dragons’ senior night.

NP trailed for much of the first two and a half quarters, but finished the game on a 23-3 flurry over the final 12 minutes to pull away to the victory.

The Dragons honored seniors Josie Hockett, Michaela Jones and Jordan Reid prior to the game, as well as senior manager Megan Long.

The Dragons trailed 16-15 at halftime, but Michaela Jones’ basket briefly gave NP the lead. Beech Grove responded with six straight points to go up 21-17, a lead the Hornets held until the middle stages of the third quarter. Reid’s putback cut the deficit to two, launching an 8-0 run. NP took the lead on Isabella Gizzi’s 3-pointer, then extended it when Gizzi went 1-2 from the line. Reid then stole an inbounds pass and scored to put NP up 25-21. BG hit a free throw, but Reid followed with two free throws to put NP up 27-22 after three.

The Hornets would score the first points of the fourth quarter and then no more. With NP leading 27-24, Grace Marshall drilled a 3-pointer out of the left corner. The Dragons’ press forced a turnover on the inbounds pass, which led to Jones hitting NP’s third 3-pointer of the game. Reid then forced a backcourt steal and scored to push the lead to 35-24 with 5:12 remaining in the game, an eight-point run in which the ball never crossed midcourt. Michaela Jones hit another 3-pointer and Addi Jones a hoop to set the final margin.

Reid finished with 19 points to lead the Dragons. Michaela Jones added eight, all in the second half. Gizzi tallied six points. Marshall scored three, while Faith Hensel and Addi Jones scored two each.

The Dragons fell behind 11-4 after a quarter before Reid led an 8-0 run to push NP back on top early in the second. BG responded with a three-point play and maintained the lead going into halftime. Reid scored 11 of the Dragons’ 15 first-half points.

The Dragons (14-6) are next in action Jan. 28 at Lawrence Central.

The Dragons won the JV game 47-19.
