The New Palestine boys basketball team followed up Friday’s victory over Pendleton Heights with an emphatic 63-52 victory Saturday over visiting Mooresville.
The Dragons used an eight-point run to start the second quarter and take a lead they’d never relinquish, leading to the first weekend sweep of the season.
Blaine Nunnally gave the Dragons an early 5-0 lead, but Mooresville came back to take an 8-6 edge after one. Steele Brasfield hit a 3-pointer to give NP a 9-8 lead early in the second. Maximus Gizzi followed up with a basket and a 3-pointer to push the edge to 14-8. Gizzi scored seven second-quarter points to lead NP to a 21-17 halftime lead.
The Dragons then pushed the edge to double digits in the third, Gizzi tallied eight points in the frame and Dawson Eastes seven. A 3-pointer by Eric Roudebush, followed by two free throws from Gizzi gave NP a 39-29 lead going into the fourth. Mooresville cut the lead to 42-36, but Brasfield drained his second 3-pointer of the game to push the lead to nine. Back-to-back dunks by Roudebush and Eastes helped extend the lead back into double digits in the closing minutes and sealed the game. Gizzi tallied eight fourth-quarter points and Brasfield seven.
Gizzi led the way with 23 points, his 12th consecutive 20-point game. He now has 1,333 career points. Brasfield tallied 13 points, his career high. Eastes also scored 13. Nunnally added eight and Roudebush six.
The Dragon JV also won 55-53 in overtime. NP’s freshman team also defeated the Pioneers.
