The New Palestine girls basketball team used overtime Friday to down conference rival Pendleton Heights 55-53 to tip off Coaches vs. Cancer night.
With several members of the 1990 sectional championship team in attendance, the Dragons raced to an early lead and then took control again in OT.
The Dragons outscored PH 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-22 halftime lead, with Jordan Reid and Michaela Jones scoring six points each in the frame. But PH climbed back in the third, cutting the Dragons’ edge to 39-36. The teams went back and forth in the final frame. With the game tied at 51-51 and PH holding for the final shot, Addi Jones’ steal sent the game to OT.
There, NP drew four fouls on PH and hit four free throws – three by Isabella Gizzi and one by Grace Marshall. PH scored to cut the lead to 54-53, but the final FT pushed the lead to two. Another strong defensive stand in the closing seconds allowed the Dragons to secure the win.
Reid led the way with 17 points. Gizzi added 13, Michaela Jones and Addi Jones tallied nine each. Faith Hensel scored six and Marshall one.
The Dragons (13-6) finish HHC play with a 6-1 mark, and have clinched at least second place in the league. The Dragons are next in action Tuesday at home against Beech Grove for Senior Night.
