Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls basketball starts strong, but falls to ranked foe

The New Palestine girls basketball team had a strong start Tuesday night, but the Dragons dropped a 67-59 decision to 2A No. 1 Triton Central.

NP led 20-15 after a quarter and 27-17 two minutes into the second after a quick 7-0 run, but the Tigers finished the first half with a 19-3 run to take a six-point lead going into halftime, then opened the second half with a 13-3 spurt to push their lead to 49-33. Michaela Jones hit three 3-pointers in a run that drew the Dragons within eight, but TC hit enough shots down the stretch to keep the margin.

Jones hit five 3-pointers – all in the second half – to lead the Dragons with 17 points. Isabella Gizzi added 14 points, including eight in the first quarter. Addi Jones hit two 3-pointers and scored nine first-half points. Jordan Reid added nine points. Grace Marshall tallied eight off the bench. Faith Hensel added two.

The Dragons (12-6) are next in action at 6 p.m. Friday against Pendleton Heights. It will be Coaches vs. Cancer night, with baskets being offered for fans to win, as well as T-shirt and bracelet sales and a recognition of the 1990 sectional championship team.
