The New Palestine girls basketball team pushed the state’s third-ranked team, but a late barrage allowed visiting Lawrence North to pull away to a 53-35 victory over the Dragons.
The game was closer than the score indicated. After struggling early, the Dragons reeled off six straight points to cut LN’s lead to 18-10 before a late basket pushed the Wildcats’ lead to 10 at the break.
NP (3-2) started the second half strong with an 8-2 run, closing the deficit to 22-18. LN answered with a 3-pointer, but the Wildcats’ lead vacillated between five and 10 points much of the remainder of the game before four 3-pointers in the final four minutes stretched their edge to 18 points.
Michaela Jones led the Dragons offensively, scoring 11 points, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. She also had four rebounds. Jordan Reid narrowly missed a double-double, tallying nine points, 10 boards and two assists. Addi Jones had nine points and four rebounds, as well as two assists. Isabella Gizzi added three points and three boards. Anna Ackerman added two points and four rebounds. Alaina Miller scored one point.
The Dragons hit 30 percent from the floor (12-40) and were 8-15 from the line. They held LN to 32 percent from the floor in the opening half and 38 percent for the game (18-48) with a strong defensive effort.
The Dragon JV won 44-39.
The Dragons are next in action Tuesday at Rushville with a 6 p.m. JV tip, followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
