The New Palestine girls basketball team opened its season Thursday with an emphatic 68-17 victory over Connersville.

The Dragons scored the game’s first 13 points and opened with a 26-1 run. They held the Spartans without a field goal for the game’s first 13:58.

The Dragons’ defense propelled the victory, producing 25 steals that led to several fast-break points.

Jordan Reid and Isabella Gizzi led three Dragons in double figures. They each tallied 14 points. Reid did so on 5-of-10 shooting. She was also 4-5 from the line and had three assists, five rebounds and three steals. Gizzi was 5-8 from the floor and 4-6 from the line. She had four assists, eight steals and five rebounds. Addi Jones added 11 points on 5-9 shooting. She had a team-high seven rebounds and six steals.

Faith Hensel scored nine points and had four rebounds off the bench. Rachel Kelley added four points. Grace Marshall had three points and six rebounds. Alexa Holman scored two points. Anna Ackerman, Alaina Miller and Josie Hockett tallied one point each.

The Dragons outscored Connersville 24-1 in the first quarter and extended the lead to 31-6 at halftime and 52-14 after three.

The Dragon JV also won 53-5.

The Dragons next play Wednesday at Greenwood, with the JV game tipping off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
