Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Shaw leads strong CC showing at Shelbyville


Brenna Shaw won the individual title Saturday in the 16-team Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational, leading a strong New Palestine showing at the event.

Shaw ran the 5K at the Blue River cross country course in 19:13.47, winning the title by eight seconds. Emma Mann was third, running 19:26.73.

They led the Dragon girls to a second-place finish in the big-school division. Kaylin Casner finished 13th (21:13.56), Kendall Mann 15th (21:28.48) and Emily Adam 17th (21:51.73), giving the Dragons all five scoring runners in the top 20. NP finished tied with Columbus North for first place with 46 places, but the Bull Dogs won the event on the sixth runner’s place. The two teams finished 19 places ahead of third-place Southport.

In the boys race, Devon Whitaker finished fifth in 17:13.15 to lead the Dragons, with Colin Darley finishing seventh (17:17.71). Carson Sams was 23rd (18:17.79). Josh Ackerman was 35th and Hayden Isaacs 39th.

The Dragons finished fourth in the large-school division with 104 places. Mt. Vernon (48) and Southport (55) took the top two spots, with Lebanon (83) third.

The Dragons will next compete Oct. 5 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at Pendleton Heights.
