The New Palestine football team had a victory for the decades Friday night, beating Greenfield-Central 68-0.
The Dragons accomplished something that hadn’t been done in more than two decades – extend a regular-season winning streak to 60 games. The streak, which began in 2013, ties Bloomington South (1967-73) for the second-longest in state history. Penn won 89 straight games from 1985-96.
Also, RB Charlie Spegal broke Brett Law’s 31-year-old IHSAA career touchdowns record with a 286-yard, six-touchdown day. The performance gave Spegal 143 career touchdowns, two more than Law.
With his 286-yard performance, Spegal – who is the state’s career rushing leader – has 8,991 career yards.
It took the Dragons one play to fire up the offense, as junior quarterback Lincoln Roth took a keeper 69 yards for a score on the game’s first snap. It ignited an offense that tallied 10 touchdowns in 10 possessions.
After G-C ground out a pair of first downs, the Dragons forced and recovered a fumble at midfield. Three plays later, Roth dialed up a 38-yard TD pass to Maxen Hook to extend the lead to 14-0. A fumble on G-C’s next snap led to another score – a 25-yard run by Spegal on the next snap.
Spegal added TD runs of 2, 56, 2 and 20 in the first half, while Roth threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Blake Austin, to extend the lead to 55-0 at halftime. Spegal and Luke Canfield added second-half touchdowns.
The Red Rage posted its first shutout of the season and first in 10 games, holding G-C to 89 total yards – all on the ground.
The Dragons (6-0) return home next week to face Shelbyville in New Palestine’s 52nd homecoming game.
