The New Palestine baseball team allowed just three hits in Monday’s sectional final, but the Dragons dropped a 10-2 decision to Cathedral.
NP outhit the Irish 6-3, but all three Cathedral hits plated runs.
The Dragons drew three walks to load the bases in the first, but were unable to score. NP fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first after four walks and an error. Cathedral plated another run in the second with a two-out RBI hit.
NP rallied in the third. Noah Mack led off by smashing a single to short. Eric Roudebush walked. Both scored on back-to-back two-out hits by Luke Greene and Henry Giesler. Cathedral scored six runs in the fifth on two walks, a hit batter, a bunt single, an error and a homerun.
The Dragons rallied in the bottom of the inning, with Grant Wiegand and Greene delivering hits. An error loaded the bases, but a flyout ended the inning. NP again had two baserunners in the seventh, with Jack Walker’s single leading the rally, but the Irish got out of the frame.
Dragon pitchers struck out 12 batters and allowed three earned runs. Walker struck out three and allowed one hit and two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings to start the game. Neligh allowed two hits and one earned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief, fanning six. Jaden Jaques pitched a perfect sixth, with three called punchouts.
The Dragons finish the season 16-13. The senior class of Greene, Jaden and Joshua Jaques, Wiegand, Neligh, Walker, Colby Jenkins and Jacob Bain graduates with conference titles in 2016 and 2018.
