Boys Varsity Track · Boys track sends five to State Finals

The New Palestine boys track team advanced three individuals and two relay teams to the State Finals from Thursday’s Warren Central regional.

The Dragons’ 4×800 relay of Devon Whitaker, Owen Kleine, Josh Collins and Drew Austin won the regional title with a time of 8:04.44, beating Columbus North by 3.99 seconds.

The Dragons then finished the meet with a strong 4×400 relay. Laine Schonauer, Carson Sams, Drew Austin and Ryker Large ran 3:25.84, finishing second to East Central by 0.9 seconds.

Schonauer finished second in the 400 in 49.83. Whitaker was also the runner-up in the 800, posting a time of 1:58.66. In the 1600, Austin finished third in 4:28.03.

The top three in each event advance. They will all compete in the State Finals May 31 at Indiana University, with the 4×800 relay beginning at 4:15 p.m.

The Dragons finished fifth as a team with 45 points. Warren Central won the regional title with 81.5. Thirty-one teams tallied points.

Also scoring for the Dragons were Collins, who was seventh in the 1600. Spencer Worth was sixth in the pole vault.

The Dragons’ 4×400 relay of Drew Austin, Carson Sams, Laine Schonauer and Ryker Large finished second in the regional and will move on to the State Finals. Austin (1600) and Schonauer (400) are also advancing in individual events.
