The No. 1 New Palestine softball team hit six homers Tuesday, including a first-inning grand slam by Jaylin Calvert, to take command in a dominant 17-0 victory over Yorktown.
The Dragons scored in every inning, opening with a seven-run first. Calvert’s grand slam was followed by Raegan Hiatt’s three-run shot, giving NP an early 7-0 lead.
Calvert and Emily O’Connor both homered twice on the day. Macy Miller also blasted a homer for the Dragons.
Calvert’s grand slam was preceded by a single by Michaela Jones, a walk to Miller and O’Connor reaching on an error. Shortly thereafter, Lexi Campbell singled and Emma Tucher reached on an error to set the stage for Hiatt – the seventh consecutive Dragon to reach and score.
O’Connor and Miller led off the second with back-to-back solo blasts. Hiatt then added an RBI single to score Calvert and extend the lead to 10-0 in the second. In the third, Miller’s two-run single was followed by Calvert’s second homer, pushing the edge to 14-0. O’Connor hit a three-run blast in the fourth.
Kaylea Bullock and Katie Kottlowski combined on a five-hit shutout. Bullock allowed two hits and fanned five over 3 2/3 innings. Kottlowski struck out three and allowed three hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Calvert led the Dragons’ offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI, including the two homers. She also doubled. Hiatt was 2-for-2 with four RBI. O’Connor was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Miller was 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI. Jones was 3-for-4 with three runs. Campbell and Tatum Biddle also had hits. Biddle scored twice.
The Dragons are now 7-0. They next play Wednesday against Zionsville.
