Michaela Jones hit two homers and drove in five runs in a 10-run fifth inning Thursday. They led the Class 3A No. 1 New Palestine softball team to a 12-2 five-inning victory at Hamilton Southeastern.
Jones’ blasts bookended the 10-run inning, which gave NP a 12-0 lead. HSE scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but could not prevent the mercy rule.
With NP leading 2-0 and one out, leadoff hitter Tatum Biddle singled. Jones followed with a blast to center to extend the lead to 4-0. She then finished the inning with a three-run blast to left, plating Biddle and Kinsey Mitchell, who reached via error and walk.
In-between, the Dragons kept the line moving. Emily O’Connor and Macy Miller followed Jones’ first homer with consecutive base hits. Both scored on Jaylin Calvert’s double. Lexi Campbell’s RBI single gave NP five consecutive hits and brought in Calvert to make it a 7-0 game. Emma Tucher had a two-out single and Mitchell walked load the bases for Biddle, who reached on an error, plating Campbell and Tucher and making it 9-0, setting the stage for Jones’ second homer.
O’Connor also had a strong game, driving in the Dragons’ first two runs. She brought home the first run with a base hit in the first, plating Biddle, who led the game off with a double. O’Connor then homered in the third.
The Dragons had 13 hits. Biddle was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs. Jones w-for-4 with five RBI, while O’Connor was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Jaylin Calvert was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Campbell was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Tucher, Raegan Hiatt and Miller also had hits.
Sam Booe nailed down the pitching win, tossing four shutout innings. She scattered four hits and struck out five. Kaylea Bullock piched the fifth, allowing one hit.
The Dragons are now 6-0 on the season. They are next in action Tuesday at home against 3A No. 3 Yorktown in an HHC game.
