The Class 3A No. 1 New Palestine softball team exploded in its final two at-bats Wednesday to pull away to an 8-3 victory over Franklin Central.
With the game tied 1-1 headed into the bottom of the fifth, a walk to Macy Miller got the Dragons going. Jaylin Calvert followed with an RBI single to give the Dragons the lead, scoring pinch runner Kinsey Mitchell. Emma Tucher then hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. Sam Booe’s two-run single extended the lead to 4-1. Lexi Campbell followed with a two-out RBI double to give the Dragons a 5-1 edge.
In the sixth, the Dragons added three more. Emily O’Connor drew a one-out walk. Miller followed with a double. A fielder’s choice, an error and an RBI single from Booe plated three runs.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the second when Tatum Biddle hit a two-out RBI single to plate Mitchell, who was running for Raegan Hiatt. FC tied the game up in the third with a solo homer.
The Dragons had nine hits, with Biddle, Miller and Booe each tallying two. Booe drove in three runs. Miller had a double. Campbell and Tucher had doubles, while Jaylin Calvert hit a single and drove in two runs.
Kaylea Bullock pitched six-plus innings, allowing one earned run, three hits and striking out two. Booe retired the last three batters with one punchout to nail down the victory.
The Dragons are now 5-0. They are back in action Thursday at Hamilton Southeastern.
