The New Palestine baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision Tuesday at 3A No. 10 Batesville in the Dragons’ season opener.
NP led 3-2 in the middle of the fifth, but the host Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to seize control. The Dragons rallied with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but fell short.
Trevor Rush led the Dragons’ offense, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Colby Jenkins added a double, a run and an RBI. Noah Mack and Grant Hickman each had a single and a run. Jack Walker had a single and an RBI. Brendan Tabor also drove in a run.
Four Dragons shared the mound, with Walker starting and fanning four over 1 2/3 innings, while allowing two runs and two hits. Zach Neligh and Hickman each pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out three. Joshua Jaques pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and five runs.
The Dragons are next in action Thursday at Franklin Central.
