Girls Varsity Gymnastics · Gymnasts advance to regional with second-place finish


The New Palestine gymnastics team clinched a spot in next week’s regional by finishing second in Saturday’s Connersville sectional.

The Dragons scored a season-best 102.05 points, finishing second to Richmond, which tallied 103.75. New Castle finished third with 98.65. The top three from the 12-team sectional move on to Friday’s regional at Columbus East.

Dragon junior Grace Shanahan finished second in the all-around with a score of 35.125. Freshman Kennedy Garrett was fourth (34.125) and sophomore Emma Poag ninth (32.05).

On floor exercise, Shanahan finished second (8.875), Garrett sixth (8.625) and Sarah Thompson eighth (8.575).

Shanahan was also second on uneven bars (8.875). Garrett was seventh (8.075) and Alyse Rickey ninth (7.925).

On balance beam, Garrett was third (8.975), Shanahan fifth (8.375) and Poag 10th (7.8).

On vault, Shanahan placed fourth (9.0).

The Dragons next compete at the Columbus East regional at 7 p.m. Friday.

Grace Shanahan was second in the all-around at the sectional. She had two runner-up finishes.
