The New Palestine girls basketball team dropped a 35-29 decision to Mt. Vernon in Saturday’s Class 4A sectional final at Mt. Vernon.
The Dragons had a strong defensive effort, holding MV to just nine field goals in the game, but fell into an early deficit and were unable to complete the comeback.
NP fought back from an early 7-4 deficit to tie the game at 7-7 at the first-quarter horn, when Haley Harrison drew a foul and hit a free throw. Leah Seib scored four early points for the Dragons. MV outscored NP 7-2 in the second quarter, with two Megan Jolly free throws the Dragons’ scoring, to take a 14-9 lead at halftime.
The Dragons trailed by as many as seven in the third quarter, but Seib hit two late baskets to cut MV’s lead to 19-17 going into the final period. NP forced turnovers on MV’s first three possessions in the fourth, but was unable to get the tying basket. MV scored the period’s first seven points to take a 26-17 lead. NP answered with six quick points – four by Jordan Reid – to cut the deficit to 26-23. A turnover gave NP the ball back down three, but the Dragons missed an open look. MV then hit nine straight free throws to seal the game.
Seib led the way with eight points. Reid scored seven, Harrison and Katie Herron six each and Jolly two.
The Dragons finish the season 21-3, the winningest season in school history. The senior class of Seib, Harrison, Herron, Jolly, Tatum Biddle, Emily Newcomb, Claire Cherry and Avery Biggs finishes with a school record 72 wins, the 2019 HHC title and a sectional championship in 2018.
