The New Palestine girls basketball team put forth one of its best defensive efforts of the season Friday in beating Greenfield-Central 46-23 in the Class 4A Mt. Vernon sectional semifinal.
The Dragons (21-2) move on to face Mt. Vernon (19-5) in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. sectional championship game.
After G-C scored a basket in the opening minute, the Dragons held the Cougars without a field goal for the next 20 and surrendered just three field goals in the game.
G-C was able to keep close at the line in the opening half. NP built an early 9-3 lead but G-C came back with strong free throw shooting to tie the game at 12-12. NP finished the half on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 edge at the break. Jordan Reid and Emily Newcomb led the run, with Reid hitting a big putback and Newcomb a basket and a free throw to key the seven-point run.
NP scored five straight points in the opening minute of the third quarter to extend its lead to 24-12, with Leah Seib scoring a three-point play and Katie Herron an inside shot. After four scoreless minutes Farrell hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to nine. G-C later cut it to eight, but Reid had three consecutive steals in the final minute of the quarter to key a five-point run. One led to a basket by Reid, a second to a three-point play by Seib, who had eight third-quarter points to push the edge to 31-18.
NP then scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to go up 46-18. Reid, Herron and Biddle all opened the quarter with points – Reid and Biddle with breakaway layups off steals – to push the edge. Seib added a pair of hoops to finish the night with 13 points. G-C scored five late points from the line.
Seib led the way with 13 points. Reid and Herron scored nine each. Biddle tallied six. Newcomb and Harrison scored three each. Claire Cherry scored two and Megan Jolly one.
Farrell led G-C with 13 points. The Cougars scored just three field goals and were 16-26 from the line. NP tallied 19 field goals.
The Dragons will be meeting MV for the second time this season. NP won 46-40 in the first meeting Dec. 11 at MV.
