The New Palestine girls basketball team tied the school single-season record with 19 wins Tuesday, using a fast start to propel an 86-48 victory over Lawrence Central.
The Dragons equaled the 1992-93 team with 19 victories. The Dragons are now 19-2 headed into Thursday’s season finale against Ritter.
NP used hot shooting early to build a 22-7 lead after a quarter and extend it to 41-21 at halftime. . The Dragons shot 65 percent (17-26) in the opening half and 58 percent (35-60) for the game. The Dragons were also 14-16 from the line. NP’s defense was also strong, holding the Bears to 22 percent shooting (15-66). The 86 points were a season high and the most since the 2001-02 season, when NP scored 86 against Evansville Harrison. The total was six points shy of the school record of 92, set in 1985.
Several Dragons had big nights. Leah Seib tied her career high with 24 points and added 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. She was 11-12 from the floor and 2-2 from the line. Haley Harrison scored 13 first-half points and finished with 15, hitting 7-14 from the field. She also had four assists. Jordan Reid added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Megan Jolly had eight points and 10 assists, the first double-digit assist game for a Dragon in at least 15 seasons. Jolly also had four steals. Tatum Biddle had a strong all-around game with seven points, six boards and three assists. Emily Newcomb scored six points off the bench. Katie Herron, Grace Marshall and Claire Cherry each scored four points. Kinsey Mitchell added two. Avery Biggs added three assists.
NP did an outstanding j0b moving the ball, with 25 assists on 35 made baskets. Nine different players had an assist.
The Dragons won the JV game 46-41.
Thursday’s Senior Night game will feature a 6 p.m. JV tipoff, followed by a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip.
