The New Palestine boys basketball team finished as the runner-up at Friday’s Decatur Central tournament.
In the semifinal, the Dragons rallied from an early deficit to beat Beech Grove 63-50. NP then fell to Decatur Central 62-53 in the championship game.
The Dragons are now 5-2 on the season.
In the semifinal, the Dragons fell behind 17-11 after a quarter and trailed by a basket at halftime, but a 17-10 third quarter allowed NP to seize the lead. The Dragons tallied 24 fourth-quarter points, including 16-of-18 from the line, to take the victory. Dawson Eastes led the Dragons with 19 points, including 12 of the team’s 22 first-half points. Matthew True added 16 – with all but two coming in the second half. Maximus Gizzi scored 13 points, including 11 in the second half. Maxen Hook and Kyle King scored six each. Dylan Romine scored two and Eric Roudebush 1. NP was 23-of-27 from the line in the contest.
In the title game, the contest was close early, with NP leading 9-7 after a quarter before falling behind 24-22 at the half. The host Hawks outscored NP 21-11 in the third quarter to take a double-digit lead.
Gizzi scored a career-high 31 points in the loss, including five 3-pointers. He drilled three triples and scored 15 fourth-quarter points to help the Dragons rally. Eastes added eight points, while True scored seven. Jacob Hockett scored three points. King and Roudebush scored two each. The Dragons struggled from the line, hitting 5-of-14. DC had four players in double figures.
The Dragons are next in action Friday, Jan. 4 at Delta. NP returns home Jan. 5 to face Southport.
