The New Palestine girls basketball team used a 21-point run spanning halftime Tuesday to pull away to a 58-37 victory over New Castle in the Dragons’ HHC opener.
After falling behind 11-10 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Dragons got hot on both ends of the floor. NP hit 9-of-21 shots in the second frame and dominated the glass, turning that into a 28-11 halftime lead and extending the edge to 31-11 into the third quarter.
NP hit 10-of-16 from both the floor and the line in the second half to maintain the lead. New Castle never cut the deficit lower than 13 points the rest of the way.
Jordan Reid had a big night, with nine of her 14 points in the first half. She added nine rebounds, as NP outrebounded the Trojans 39-23. Leah Seib added 11 points and eight boards. Haley Harrison scored 10 points and had two assists and two steals, giving NP three players in double-figures. Katie Herron had eight points and 10 rebounds. Megan Jolly had a solid game with seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Tatum Biddle and Michaela Jones shared defensive duties on NC’s Cameron Tabor, who came into the game the HHC’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 27.9 ppg. Tabor was held to four points in the first half and finished with 16 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Biddle finished the night with three points, Jones with five.
The Dragon JV also won 45-22.
The Dragons (7-1, 1-0 HHC) next play Saturday at Delta with a 1 p.m. JV tip, followed by a 2:30 p.m. varsity game.
