Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls basketball gets defensive in opening rout


The New Palestine girls basketball team posted a shutout quarter and had a strong defensive effort in a season-opening 71-17 victory over Connersville at the Spartan Bowl.

The Dragons jumped out to a 13-2 lead after a quarter and extended the edge to 35-9 at the half. NP then outscored the host Spartans 20-0 in the penultimate frame.

Katie Herron had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons, hitting 8-of-9 from the floor. Jordan Reid added 17 points, as well as three assists, five steals, a blocked shot and five boards. Michaela Jones and Leah Seib added eight points each. Seib also had seven rebounds. Claire Cherry had six points, three rebounds and two assists. Megan Jolly had six points, two assists, three rebounds and four steals. Haley Harrison added five points and two assists. Tatum Biddle and Addi Jones had two points each.

The Dragons shot 42 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the stripe, hitting 16-of-20, in the game.

The Dragons are next in action Wednesday, Nov. 7 at home against Greenwood.

Katie Herron tallied a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards.
