The New Palestine volleyball team had a perfect day to win the title at Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.
The Dragons opened the day with a 25-4, 25-10 victory over Rushville. Audrey VanderWal had four aces and eight digs. Lydia Jones and Jesi Hall had seven kills each. Kaelyn Armstrong added six kills and four digs. Kennedy Stephenson had three kills. Sydney Robertson had 14 assists and Sarah Adam a career-high 10 assists.
NP then beat Lawrence Central 25-11, 25-9. Armstrong had eight kills in 10 attempts with no errors for an astronomical .800 hitting percentage. Jones added six kills, Hall five and Lauren Dodd four. Robertson had 22 assists.
The Dragons had to rally in the final match to beat Southport 16-25, 25-10, 15-9. Armstrong had 10 kills. Jones added eight kills and five digs. Isabel Martens had six kills. Hall had five and Dodd four. Robertson had 25 assists. Rylie Sturgeon led the defense with eight digs.
“We did a nice job of bouncing back in Set 2 against Southport,” Dragons coach Kelli Whitaker said. “They came out strong and we had a hard time slowing down their outside hitter. The next two sets we focused on being more aggressive to keep them out of system. We did a great job putting pressure on their serve receive. It was a close match and the environment was intense. Great to see us win the decisive set. It builds a lot of character.”
Saturday’s invitational was the second Saturday tourney the Dragons have won this season. NP also won the Greenwood Invitational.
The Dragons are now 16-5 on the season. They are back in action Monday at home against Franklin Central.
