The New Palestine cross country teams both finished second in Saturday’s Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational at Blue River Park in Shelbyville.
The Dragon boys tallied 49 places to finish second to state-ranked Brebeuf, which had 37 places. NP was 21 places ahead of third-place Southport in the 17-team event.
The Dragon girls finished second with 55 places. They were runners-up to Brebeuf (23), but nosed out Columbus North (57) for the runner-up spot.
For the Dragon boys, Kyler Harrison led the way with a sixth-place finish, running the 5K course in 16:35. Drew Austin was ninth (16:38) and Josh Collins 10th (16:40) to give NP three in the top 10. Devon Whitaker placed 18th (17:04) and Caleb Stirm 29th (17:32).
The Dragon girls placed all five scoring runners in the top 16 to finish second.
Brenna Shaw led the way with a seventh-place finish, running the 5K course in 19:10. Kendall Mann was 10th (19:33). Kaylin Casner came home 12th (19:53), followed by Victoria Crowder in 15th (20:09) and Emily Adam in 16th (20:13).
The Dragons next compete Sept. 29 at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at the Muncie Sportsplex.
