The New Palestine boys tennis team clinched the Hancock County championship Saturday, winning individual championships at three of the five spots.
NP tallied 27 points to win, with Mt. Vernon (21) finishing second. Greenfield-Central had seven points and Eastern Hancock five.
Matthew True dropped one game at No. 1 singles en route to his fourth county title. He beat MV’s J.D. Cohee 6-1, 6-0 in the semi, and EH’s Kody Huff 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match. True now has 71 career varsity victories.
Carson Gavin won the title at No. 2 singles, beating G-C’s Steven Roland 6-0, 6-1 in the semi and MV’s Chris Hays 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 in the final.
At No. 1 doubles, Dane Reid/Ben Blachly claimed the crown. They beat MV’s Peyton Meadors/Brendan Browning 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in the semi and then beat G-C’s Mason Bussel/Colin Hunt 6-3, 6-0 in the championship match.
Trevor Darley was runner-up at No. 3 singles. He beat EH’s John McDaniel 6-0, 6-3 in the semi, then fell to MV’s Sam McCarty 6-2, 6-0 in the final.
The Dragons were also runners-up at No. 2 doubles. Ethan Haeberle/Jeremy Wagoner won 6-0, 6-0 over EH’s Peyton Robertson/Sam Blocher in the semi, then fell to MV’s Jackson Dunlavy/Sam Frye 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
NP also won the JV tournament with 26 points, with MV tallying 22. Colin Darley (No. 1 singles), Nick Miller (No. 3 singles) and Ezra Schwier/Devon Bird (No. 2 doubles) all won county titles.
