The New Palestine cross country teams ran against many of the state’s best athletes Saturday at the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Both Dragon teams ran in the elite division of one of the state’s biggest meets – which featured 48 girls teams and 56 boys teams running across four divisions. The Dragons raced in the elite division based on their performances in the meet from a year ago.
The Dragon boys placed 12th with 254 places in a 16-team race. North Central (53) won, ahead of Pendleton Heights (119), Carroll (Allen) (121) and Carmel (124).
Drew Austin led the way for the Dragons, finishing 22nd in 16:52.9. Kyler Harrison was 36th (17:07.1), Josh Collins 55th (17:24.4), Caleb Stirm 61st (17:37.4) and Devon Whitaker 102nd (18:21.8).
The Dragon girls placed 13th with 332 places in the 18-team race. Carroll (Allen) won with 49 places, beating Carmel (77) and Noblesville (99).
Brenna Shaw led the Dragons with a 48th-place finish (20:32.8). Emily Adam placed 55th (20:41.6). Haley Rickey was 75th (21:10.3), Kaylin Casner 92nd (21:35.4) and Kendall Mann 98th (21:48.4).
The teams next compete Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Whiteland Invitational. The race will be run at Break-O-Day Elementary School in Whiteland.
