New Palestine High School sophomore Grace Shanahan won the title in the balance beam and finished second in the all-around. She helped lead the Dragon gymnastics team to fourth place in the Connersville sectional.

Shanahan scored 9.425 on the beam to outscore Pendleton Heights’ Cassie Zehr, who scored 9.0.

Shanahan scored 35.7 total points to finish second to Zehr (35.725) in the all-around. Shanahan was also tied for second on the floor exercise (9.05) and third on uneven bars (8.675) and 12th on vault (8.55).

She will compete in next week’s regional in all four events, as the top six placers in the all-around and in each event move on.

Sarah Thompson will also advance to the regional on floor exercise, as she finished fifth with a score of 8.9.

The Dragons tallied a team score of 99.5 to finish fourth in a 15-school field. Richmond (102.425), Connersville (100.975) and New Castle (100.075) took the top three spots and will advance to the regional as teams.

On floor exercise, Kinsey Dilley 14th (8.475). On balance beam, Taylor brown was 16th (7.725) and Anna Greiner 20th (7.475). On uneven bars, Emma Poag was 17th (7.65). On vault, Thompson was 11th (8.65). Taylor Brown tied for 12th (8.55) and Emma Poag was 15th (8.5). Brown was 20th in the all-around (30.325).

Shanahan and Thompson will compete in the regional at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3 at Connersville’s Spartan Bowl.
