New Palestine High School senior Landan Burton has punched his ticket to the IHSAA wrestling State Finals, winning his first two matches at Saturday’s New Castle semistate.
Burton went 2-0 in the “ticket rounds” – the first two rounds of the 16-team bracket – to clinch his spot in the State Finals. He placed fourth at 220.
Burton will compete in the State Finals Friday, Feb. 16 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. His first-round opponent – a champion from another semistate – will be announced Sunday. Friday’s match is the first of four rounds at the State Finals for each 16-wrestler bracket.
He started the day with an 11-3 major decision over Anderson’s Venice McCullough, and clinched a State Finals spot with a 93-second pin of North Montgomery’s Drew Webster. The final two rounds pitted the four regional champions against each other for placement in next week’s State Finals. Burton dropped a 5-4 decision to Elwood’s Kyle Cornwell in the semifinal, then lost by fall in 3:45 to Lebanon’s Jacob McClaine in the third-place match.
Burton takes a 42-3 record into the State Finals, as well as conference, sectional and regional championships.
Burton was one of four Dragons to compete at the semistate. Freshman Christian White won his first-round match at 106 by fall in 1:53 over Milan’s Garrett Condo. White then lost by fall to Cathedral’s Logan Bailey in 4:40 in the ticket round. White finishes his season 34-9.
At 145, Noah Wright finishes 31-12 after a 5-0 loss to Southmont’s Dakota Ball in the opening round. At 195, Brayden Clevenger finishes 32-12 after a loss by fall to Pendleton Heights’ Tremor Bynum in the first round.
