Boys Varsity Wrestling · Burton punches ticket to State Finals

New Palestine High School senior Landan Burton has punched his ticket to the IHSAA wrestling State Finals, winning his first two matches at Saturday’s New Castle semistate.

Landan Burton wrestles in the opening round of the semistate at New Castle. Burton finished fourth to punch his ticket to the State Finals.

Burton went 2-0 in the “ticket rounds” – the first two rounds of the 16-team bracket – to clinch his spot in the State Finals. He placed fourth at 220.

Burton will compete in the State Finals Friday, Feb. 16 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. His first-round opponent – a champion from another semistate – will be announced Sunday. Friday’s match is the first of four rounds at the State Finals for each 16-wrestler bracket.

He started the day with an 11-3 major decision over Anderson’s Venice McCullough, and clinched a State Finals spot with a 93-second pin of North Montgomery’s Drew Webster. The final two rounds pitted the four regional champions against each other for placement in next week’s State Finals. Burton dropped a 5-4 decision to Elwood’s Kyle Cornwell in the semifinal, then lost by fall in 3:45 to Lebanon’s Jacob McClaine in the third-place match.

Burton takes a 42-3 record into the State Finals, as well as conference, sectional and regional championships.

Burton was one of four Dragons to compete at the semistate. Freshman Christian White won his first-round match at 106 by fall in 1:53 over Milan’s Garrett Condo. White then lost by fall to Cathedral’s Logan Bailey in 4:40 in the ticket round. White finishes his season 34-9.

At 145, Noah Wright finishes 31-12 after a 5-0 loss to Southmont’s Dakota Ball in the opening round. At 195, Brayden Clevenger finishes 32-12 after a loss by fall to Pendleton Heights’ Tremor Bynum in the first round.
