The New Palestine girls swimming and diving team finished third in the sectional Saturday.
The Dragons had several strong swims, with seven top-five finishes and three sectional runners-up. NP scored 284.5 points, finishing behind Greenfield-Central (502) and Mt. Vernon (336.5). The Dragons were 19.5 points ahead of fourth-place Connersville (265). NP also finished ahead of Centerville (243), Richmond (188), Eastern Hancock (145), Hagerstown (111) and New Castle (39).
The meet began with the Dragons’ top finish, the 200 medley relay. Maria Virt, Hailee Holberton, Jessica Rogers and Anna Doolin finished second with a time of 1:56.46 – just 81 hundredths of a second from advancing to the State Finals.
The 200 free relay of Rogers, Doolin, Holberton and Virt was also second with a time of 1:44.71 – 1.98 seconds back of the sectional champion.
Rogers had the Dragons’ other runner-up finish, finishing second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.88. She was 3.63 seconds behind champion Lydia Tierney of Mt. Vernon. Maigan Williams placed seventh in the event (1:08.82).
Rogers was fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.83), with Doolin seventh (26.05) and Cassy Moorman 14th (29.42).
Doolin and Holberton also each had top-five finishes. Doolin was fourth in the 100 freestyle (57.25), with Moorman 12th (1:01.56). Holberton was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.25). Jordan Owens was 11th (1:22.48) and Claire Whisler 13th (1:24.11).
Karen Shriver had the Dragons’ seventh top-five finish, placing fifth in diving with a score of 318.30.
Holberton was sixth in the 200 IM (2:28.11). Virt was sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.25), with Grace Mitchell 16th (1:20.61). Virt was also seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:10.72), with Bailey Young 10th (2:16.68) and Williams 11th (2:18.08).
Young was seventh in the 500 freestyle (6:10.07), with Emma Nobbe ninth (6:12.12). The 400 free relay of Moorman, Williams, Young and Kaylynn Crawmer was sixth (4:14.78).
