New Palestine High School senior Landan Burton won the Hoosier Heritage Conference wrestling title at 220 pounds, posting an 11-3 major decision over New Castle’s Dalton Clouse in the final.
The victory improved Burton’s record to 32-1 on the season.
It helped the Dragons finish sixth in the conference meet with 143.5 points. Yorktown was the HHC champion with 188 points, ahead of Pendleton Heights (180) and Greenfield-Central (168). NP was narrowly behind New Castle (154.5) and Mt. Vernon (144.5). The Dragons finished ahead of Delta (130) and Shelbyville (73).
The Dragons had three wrestlers in the finals. Christian White (106) and Logan Robinson (160) both finished as runners-up.
Burton’s day involved a victory by forfeit in the opening round. He had a 12-4 major decision over Pendleton Heights’ Cade Campbell in the semifinals to get to the championship match.
At 106, White had a win by fall over Mt. Vernon’s Walker Thornton and a 14-3 major decision over Shelbyville’s Dillon Berry before falling to Yorktown’s Zach Todd 13-2 in the final match.
At 160, Robinson had a win by fall over Yorktown’s Aaron Willis and a 12-4 major decision over New Castle’s Corbin Hines. He lost by fall in the final to Mt. Vernon’s Drake Kendrex.
Noah Wright had a third-place finish at 145, winning over New Castle’s Seth Moore, Delta’s Dalton Love and Pendleton Heights’ Caleb Gibson, but falling to eventual HHC champ Christian Hunt of Yorktown in the second round. Hunter Holcombe finished third at 285. He had two wins by forfeith and a 5-3 victory over Mt. Vernon’s Jake Slotnicki in the third-place match.
Brayden Clevenger placed fourth at 195. Chase Nelson (113), Jared Diep (120) and Richard Clevenger (152) placed fifth. Christian Rudolph (126) and C.J. Faubion (182) both finished sixth.
The wrestlers next compete Wednesday at home in a dual meet against Zionsville.
