Girls Varsity Basketball · Girls basketball goes 1-1 at Noblesville


The New Palestine girls basketball team went 1-1 on the day Friday at the Noblesville Tournament, placing third in the four-team event.

In the semifinal, a fourth-quarter rally fell short as the Dragons fell to host Noblesville 69-60. NP then rallied to beat Southport 59-52 in the consolation game.

Megan Jolly and Leah Seib provided a strong inside-outside game against Southport, as the two combined for 35 points. Seib scored 18 points, including six in the fourth quarter as the Dragons held Southport at arm’s length. Jolly scored 17 points, hitting three baskets in the key third quarter in which the Dragons seized control of the game. She was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Haley Harrison hit two 3-pointers in the Dragons’ 19-point second quarter and finished with six points. Emma Grable also scored six. Eliza Adams and Claire Cherry scored four points each. Tatum Biddle and Katie Herron scored two each. NP led 31-26 at halftime and 40-34 after three.

The Dragons are now 11-3, with two of the victories coming against Southport.

In the semifinal contest against Noblesville, the Dragons trailed 49-39 going into the final quarter, but then opened the period with an 11-0 run to take the lead. The teams traded baskets before Noblesville pulled away in the late stages.

Emily Newcomb scored a career-high 14 points. Grable scored 13, all in the first quarter as the Dragons trailed 20-19 after the first stop and 32-29 at halftime. Harrison scored 11 points and Biddle 10, giving the Dragons four double-figure scorers for the second straight game. Seib added nine points and Jolly three.

The Dragons next play Tuesday at home against Herron. The JV game tips at 6 p.m.
