The New Palestine girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, falling t0 Mt. Vernon 60-47.

The Dragons used a 11-4 run at the end of the first quarter to take a lead, but a hot-shooting MV team took the lead early in the second and maintained it throughout much of the rest of the contest. MV shot 61 percent from the floor in the first half and 48 percent for the game (19-of-39).

The Dragons’ defense helped rally the team in the second half. After trailing by eight early in the third, the Dragons outscored MV 15-7 over an eight-minute stretch to take a 42-41 lead with 4:30 left. Trailing by four, Michaela Jones hit a 3-pointer, Megan Jolly grabbed a rebound, drew a foul and drained two shots to put the Dragons on top. However, MV scored on its next three possessions, a 6-1 spurt that put the Marauders up 47-43. Two more free throws extended the lead before Jolly hit a long two-pointer to cut the deficit to 49-45. The Marauders hit 12 of their last 13 free throws to extend their lead.

Jones and Seib led three Dragons in double-figures with 11 points each. Jones hit 5-of-9 from the field, while Seib was 4-of-8 from the field. Seib also had five rebounds and two assists. Jones had two assists and four boards. Jolly scored 10 points and added two assists. Five other Dragons – Haley Harrison, Katie Herron, Emily Newcomb, Tatum Biddle and Emma Grable – scored three points each.  Herron also had 10 rebounds as NP outrebounded MV 28-26. Harrison had a team-high three assists. Harrison and Newcomb led the Dragons with two steals each.

NP hit 17-of-24 from the line and was 13-of-42 from the field.

The Dragons are now 9-1 and 4-1 in HHC play. They next compete Saturday at HHC foe Yorktown.

The Dragon JV also fell 52-30.
