The New Palestine boys basketball team had another strong defensive performance Saturday, but suffered its first defeat of the season in a 49-44 loss to Westfield.
The visiting Shamrocks took the lead in the second quarter, going up 27-23 at the break. Gavin Hausz scored five straight points in the third to cut the deficit to 36-35 at the end of three. After Westfield scored four straight, NP answered with nine straight points – two baskets each by Maxen Hook and Matthew True, including a True 3-pointer, to go up 44-40. Westfield scored back-to-back baskets in the final two minutes to take the lead, then put the game away at the line, scoring the game’s final nine points.
True led the Dragons, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 13 points. Dylan Romine scored nine points – all in the second quarter. Maximus Gizzi added eight points. Hausz had five, Hook four, Dawson Eastes three and Jack Walker two.
The Dragons (4-1) are next in action Friday at New Castle in a Hoosier Heritage Conference matchup.
The Dragon JV won 50-47 in overtime.
