The New Palestine girls basketball team tied a school record for the longest win streak to start a season Tuesday, beating Shelbyville 52-29.

The victory gave the Dragons an 8-0 record – tying the 1988-89 and 1993-94 teams for the longest win streak to start a season in the program’s 44-year history. The Dragons are also 3-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

After surrendering the game’s first basket, the Dragons used a 16-0 first-half run to seize control of the game and never let the lead fall below double digits.

Haley Harrison drilled a 3-pointer to get NP started, while the Dragons got good balance, as seven different players scored in the 16-point run and nine different players tallied points overall.

Megan Jolly led the Dragons with 13 points – scoring 11 in the first half. She added four assists, three rebounds and four of the team’s 19 steals. NP’s defense forced 27 turnovers, while committing only nine. Harrison added 10 points, hitting two 3-pointers – and grabbed two boards. Emma Grable added nine points and four rebounds. Leah Seib had eight points and a team-high eight boards.

The Dragons got contributions from throughout the roster. Eliza Adams added five points and five rebounds. Katie Herron had three points and three steals. Claire Cherry scored two points. Tatum Biddle had one point, two assists and four steals. Michaela Jones had one point and three steals. Emily Newcomb added two assists.

The Dragon JV also won 48-16, with Josie Hockett scoring 11 points to lead the way.

NP continues its schedule at 6 p.m. Friday at home against Greenfield-Central in the opening half of a girls/boys varsity doubleheader, tipping off Brody Strong night.
