The New Palestine girls basketball team used a pair of double-digit runs to pull away to a 60-53 victory over Perry Meridian.

The Dragons improved to 5-0, extending their best start in 22 seasons.

Junior Leah Seib tied her career high with 19 points, while junior Megan Jolly set her career high with 17 in the victory. The two helped NP shoot 18-of-23 from the line and help seal the game in the fourth quarter.

Seib hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the first quarter to spur a 12-point run that gave the Dragons an early 12-2 lead. NP then withstood a 15-0 Perry Meridian run that put the Falcons up 23-18. The Dragons responded by scoring the next eight points – six from Jolly – to eventually take a two-point lead into halftime at 26-24.

NP then started the second half hot – with Haley Harrison hitting two 3-pointers to cap a 10-0 run that put NP up 36-24. The Dragons eventually pushed the lead as high as 46-31 on back-to-back triples by Michaela Jones and Seib.

Perry made a run in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to nine with four minutes left before Seib scored on back-to-back possessions. The Falcons closed the lead again to 54-47, but Katie Herron hit a foul shot and Jolly followed with 3-of-4 from the line to push the lead back into double-digits in the final minute.

NP had a strong all-around effort, hitting 46 percent – 6-of-13 – from behind the 3-point arc. The Dragons were 4-of-6 after halftime from 3-point range. The Dragons were 18-of-51 for the game. PM was 20-of-46, but the Falcons shot just 2-of-15 from distance. Jolly had a career-high eight rebounds, while Seib and Herron had six each as the Dragons outrebounded their visitors 32-31. NP’s defense also forced 20 turnovers.

Jolly added five assists. Harrison had eight points, two assists and three steals. Jones had a career-high nine points, to go along with five rebounds and two steals after earning her first varsity start. Herron had seven points and added two assists.

The Dragons’ JV also won 40-34, rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit to outscore the Falcons 28-10 in the second half.

NP next plays Tuesday at New Castle to open HHC play. The JV game tips at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
