The New Palestine cross country teams both advanced to the semistate after posting strong days at Saturday’s Rushville regional.
The Dragon boys finished second in the 10-team regional, just four places back of regional champion Franklin Central. The NP girls finished third.
The top five teams advance to the semistate, which will be held next Saturday at Blue River Park in Shelbyville.
The NP boys tallied 78 places, just behind regional champ Franklin Central, which won the title with 74. Drew Austin led the way for the Dragons with an eighth-place finish in 17:21. Kyler Harrison was 13th (17:34) and Josh Collins 15th (17:36). Devon Whitaker placed 30th (18:11) and Alex Mohr 39th (18:22).
NP was well ahead of third-place Roncalli (103). Hagerstown (113) and Cambridge City Lincoln (120) also advanced.
In the girls race, the Dragons had two top-10 runners and were third with 109 places. Franklin Central (25) won the regional title with five runners in the top 10. Rushville (93) was second. NP was ahead of Warren Central (113) and Greenfield-Central (163).
The Dragons were led by Brenna Shaw, who finished eighth in 20:33. Kendall Mann was ninth in 20:39. Grace Voelz placed 31st (22:51), Sophia Taylor 34th (22:59) and Haley Rickey 35th (22:59).
