The New Palestine varsity tennis team clinched its sixth consecutive sectional championship Friday with a 4-1 victory over host Mt. Vernon in the sectional championship match. It marked the 13th sectional championship in the program’s history.
No. 1 singles player for the Dragons, Matthew True made few mistakes in his polished 6-0, 6-1 victory over MV senior Matthew McCullough. The determined True extended his record to 19-5.
At No. 2 singles for NP, Ben Blachly proved too steady for Marauder Thomas Obergfell, winning 6-0, 6-3. The Dragon improved his record to 20-4.
Carson Gavin played against freshman Chris Hays and produced his best match of the season to defeat the Marauder 6-1, 6-1. Gavin took his record to 21-3.
NP No. 1 doubles pairing of Nick Rusche and Colby Wagoner played with tenacity and confidence to shut out MV’s Sam Frye and Brayden Browning 6-2, 6-2. Rusche and Wagoner took their record to 19=3.
The Dragons’ No. 2 doubles combination of David Hockett and Dane Reid made few mistakes to take the first set against Sam McCarty and Peyton Meadors 6-2. The Marauders used the lob to good effect in the windy conditions to win the second set. Hockett and Reid recovered well and set up a 4-2 lead in the deciding set. NP served for the match at 5-4 but Hockett failed to hold serve. The Marauders held their nerve to pull off a surprise victory 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The Dragons extended their record to 20-4 for the season. They will face Lawrence North in Tuesday’s regional semifinal match at North Central.
