After winning the IHSAA state championship in the 800 meter run, NPHS senior Samuel Voelz has continued a strong postseason.
Last week, he was named Indiana’s Mr. Distance for his outstanding season – in which he not only won the state title in the 800, but also was a state runner-up in both the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. He then won the 800 at the Midwest Meet of Champions in Ohio.
Sunday, Voelz capped his high school track and field career by winning his heat and finishing fifth overall in the 800 meters at the New Balance Nationals, a national meet held in Greensboro, N.C.
Voelz ran a time of 1:51.90, breaking his own school record, at the national meet. He attained All-American status.
The state runner-up NPHS 4×800 relay also competed in the national meet. Caleb Eagleson, Chase Crowder, Spencer Corey and Voelz finished 25th with a time of 7:58.07, in a meet that includes both high school and club teams.
