The New Palestine boys track and field team won the regional championship in three events and sent two more athletes on to the State Finals from Thursday’s Warren Central regional.
Sam Voelz and two relay teams – the 4×400 and 4×800 – claimed regional championships Thursday night. In addition, Caleb Eagleson and Brady Walden punched their tickets to the State Finals, which will be held Friday, June 2 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
As a team, the Dragons finished fourth with 59 points, just 5.5 back of third-place Columbus North. Warren Central (98) won the regional, with Center Grove (78.5) finishing second. The Dragons were 22 points ahead of fifth-place Whiteland.
Voelz won an individual title, breaking the state meet qualifying standard with a time of 1:55.09 in the 800. He won by 1.01 seconds ahead of Franklin’s Chandler McGaha.
In the 4×400 relay, the quartet of Colby Jenkins, Spencer Corey, Voelz and Walden won the regional title in a close race with Warren Central. The Dragon quartet ran 3:21.02 and beat WC by six hundredths of a second in a race coach Kyle Ralph said was “one of the best I’ve ever seen.”
The 4×800 relay beat the state standard and the eight-minute mark, as Corey, Chase Crowder, Eagleson and Voelz ran 7:55.02, their second-fastest time of the year and the second-fastest in school history. They won the regional title by 14.06 seconds.
Eagleson punched his ticket to the State Finals in the 1600, running the mile in 4:27.55 to finish second to Greenwood’s Ethan Pine. Crowder placed fifth (4:33.16) in the 1600. Walden finished third in the long jump to advance, leaping a school record 21-11.
The Dragons’ 4×100 relay of Adam Brickens, Colby Jenkins, DuRon Ford and Walden finished fourth with a time of 43.53 seconds, breaking the school record.
Also scoring were Corey, who finished fifth in the 400 (51.84), and Laine Schonauer, who was seventh in high jump (6-1).
In addition,Ford was ninth in the 100 with a personal-best 11.22. Jared Reed finished 13th in the 110 hurdles with a personal best 15.87. Eagleson finished 12th in the 3200 (10:28.18). Gavin Hausz was 17th in high jump (5-10).
