The New Palestine baseball team had a tremendous battle in a matchup of ranked teams Tuesday, eventually falling 4-3 to Cathedral in 11 innings at Marian University.
The Dragons, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, and the host Irish traded the lead and runs several times in a tight matchup.
NP’s hurlers pitched out of bases-loaded situations twice in extra innings, including a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the 10th, before Cathedral broke through in the 11th.
NP scored twice in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead, and then scored in the top of the fifth to re-take the lead at 3-2 after the Irish tied it in the bottom of the fourth. Cathedral knotted the game up in the fifth at 3-3 and carried that to extra innings.
Colby Jenkins had an RBI double for the Dragons. Cameron Pitzer also drove in a run. Jacob Smith had a hit and a run. Kyle Gardner had a double and a run scored. Nick Rusche also doubled. Jack Walker and Keegan Watson also had hits for the Dragons.
Starter Jacob Garrison scattering five hits and four walks over five innings, striking out one. Gardner and Watson pitched three innings of relief, and Smith pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.
The Dragons are now 8-2 on the season. They next play Friday at home against Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Mt. Vernon.
