Multiple Teams · Dragon hoops sectional weekend preview

Fresh off a 68-50 victory over Marshall in the opening round of the sectional, the New Palestine boys basketball team gets back to action tonight in the semifinals against Chatard.

The Dragons are now 7-16 on the season and are playing some of their best basketball of the season. They have won two straight games by 18-point margins. A big reason why is the Dragons are getting big contributions and great balance. In Tuesday’s victory, guard Matthew True hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points – 15 in the fourth quarter – while senior Jalen Qualkinbush had a career-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman guard Maximus Gizzi had 13 points and five assists in the victory.

NP is also shooting 78 percent from the line in its last eight games.

This year marks the Dragons’ sectional centennial. New Palestine is seeking its eighth sectional championship and fourth since 2009. The Dragons are meeting a Chatard team that is 3-19, but is also entering the sectional off a victory in its final regular season game. The winner faces either No. 4 Crispus Attucks (19-4) or No. 8 Manual (18-6) in the sectional championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Brebeuf.

Dragon Radio will broadcast tonight’s game. The game will also be webcast on IHSAAtv.
