The New Palestine boys basketball team finished its regular season Friday with an emphatic 71-53 victory over Greenwood.
NP honored seniors Graham Biggs, Jalen Qualkinbush and Sam Voelz prior to the game, and they combined with their teammates to take an early lead and pull away to the win.
The Dragons hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter to build a 23-16 lead after one, then extended it to 38-30 at the break and 52-42 after three, before a 19-point fourth quarter sealed it.
Freshman Maximus Gizzi and sophomore Matthew True each hit two first-quarter triples to stake the Dragons to that early lead. The duo led NP in scoring, as Gizzi tied his career high with a 2-point game. True hit three first-half 3-pointers and tallied 16. In the second quarter, Gavin Hausz hit a pair of triples, giving him an 11-point half in a 13-point game.
NP salted the game away in the fourth quarter by hitting 13-of-14 ffrom the line. The Dragons were 16-of-17 for the game. Dylan Romine hit six fourth-quarter free throws and scored eight points. Qualkinbush was 3-of-3 from the line and scored five of his eight points in the final eight minutes. Voelz added four points and Biggs two.
Greenwood was led by Braydon Kincaid, who scored 12 points.
The Dragons finish the regular season with a 6-16 record. They will open play in the 3A Brebeuf sectional Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. game against Marshall.
The Dragon JV won 59-45 behind 11 points from Justin Rightley and nine from Austin Howell. The JV finished the season with a 13-9 mark.
