New Palestine wrestlers Landan Burton and Alec White won individual championships at Saturday’s Warren Central sectional, and were two of the three Dragons who punched their tickets to the regional.
White won his second career sectional title and continued his undefeated senior season, while Burton became a first-time sectional champion.
In addition, Brayden Clevenger finished fourth at 182 and will also advance to the regional, which will be held next Saturday at Perry Meridian High School. The top four in each weight class advance.
At 126, White rolled through the four rounds, winning three matches by fall. He had first-minute pins over Triton Central’s Carson Alfrey and Shelbyville’s Jordan Vinson in the first two rounds. He pinned Franklin Central’s Chase Peavler in 5:36 in the semis, and decisioned Warren Central’s Dylan Culp 6-2 in the title match. White is now 29-0 on teh season.
At 220, Burton also rolled into the final with two first-minute pins over Warren Central’s George Cousin and Roncalli’s John Harris. In the title match, he had two takedowns to beat Beech Grove’s Isaiah Greene 6-4. A junior, Burton is now 27-4.
Clevenger dropped his quarterfinal match, but he wrestled back to fourth place. He dropped his first match to Mt. Vernon’s P.J. Sterrett 5-2. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Greenfield-Central’s Malachi Mersch and Warren Central’s Randy Wells to get into the third-place match and punch his ticket to the regional. There, he fell 9-8 in an entertaining match to Franklin Central’s Gavin Keesee to finish fourth. Clevenger is now 17-14 on the season.
Placing fifth were Chase Nelson at 106 and Noah Wright at 145. Placing sixth were Cage Brasfield at 195 and Hunter Holcombe at 285.
As a team, the Dragons finished seventh in the 11-team field with a score of 88 points. Roncalli was the sectional champion with 264.5, ahead of Warren Central (190.5).
