The New Palestine boys basketball team finished fourth at the Beech Grove tournament, falling to host Beech Grove 76-43 in the opening round, then dropping a 51-47 decision to Decatur Central in the consolation game.
In the opener, the hosts had a hot start, jumping ahead of NP 18-3 in the first quarter and extending it to 38-15 at the half and 60-30 after three.
In the second game, the Dragons put on a furious fourth-quarter comeback after the lights went out at Beech Grove. NP trailed 11-6 after a quarter and 25-13 at the half. A 13-11 third quarter drew the Dragons within 10 after three, but DC used a big run to take a 47-32 lead when the lights went out. After the delay, the Dragons responded with a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to 49-45 in the final minute, but DC was able to hold on to beat the Dragons 51-47.
Maximus Gizzi had 15 points for the Dragons in the consolation game. Jalen Qualkinbush had 11.
The Dragons are now 1-7 on the season. They next play Friday, Jan. 6 at Delta. The next home game is Saturday, Jan. 7 against sectional opponent Marshall, with a 6 p.m. JV tipoff and 7:30 p.m. varsity tipoff both nights.
