The New Palestine girls soccer team finished the regular season Monday evening with a 3-0 victory over host Shelbyville.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the first half, with goals from Katie Settergren and Corrin Neese. Olivia McKilligin gave the Dragons a three-goal edge in the second half with a one-touch goal on a through ball from Meaghan Matus.
Settergren’s goal came as she blasted the ball through a crowd in a congested penalty area. Neese carried downfield with a defender on her heels, beating Shelbyville’s goalkeeper to the far post to create the two-goal edge.
“The Dragons found their passing game again tonight and moved the ball very well,” NP coach Gina Fannin said. “Although only three goals were scored, we maintained possession for the majority of the game, only allowing the Golden Bears on their half of the field a handful of times.”
Fannin cited the play of Matus and Neese, as well as Victoria Crowder and Grace Voelz in the victory.
“All of the Dragon seniors got onto the field tonight for the last regular season game,” Fannin added. “Time to prepare for sectional.”
The Dragons finish the regular season 10-3-1, including 5-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. They open sectional play next week at Greenfield-Central against Mt. Vernon.
