The New Palestine volleyball team posted a three-set sweep of Connersville in its season opener Monday, as the Dragons won 25-12, 25-13, 25-16.
NP jumped out to an early lead in each of the first two sets to pull away. In the second set, Mia Long served the Dragons to a 5-0 lead, and then Maddie Wampner helped the Dragons pull away with three straight aces, followed by two aces late in the set by Kara Morris. In the third, the Dragons went on a 15-5 run to break the set open.
Junior Allison Dennemann had 17 kills and two blocks, while junior Mia Long had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Kara Morris had 34 assists, five aces and four kills. Sophomore libero Lydia Jones had 12 digs, and senior hitter Audrey Edwards added five kills. Jordan Brittsan had three kills on four attempts, a .750 hitting percentage.
“It was nice to finally have our first game,” Dragons coach Kelli Whitaker said. “We’ve been working hard all summer long. I think our growth and experience showed tonight. It was awesome to have a huge student section. It really gave the girls a lot of energy.”
The Dragons’ JV also won 25-16, 25-18.
The volleyball team’s next match is Wednesday at home against Guerin Catholic, with a 5:30 p.m. JV start.
