The seventh-ranked New Palestine baseball team saw its bid for three consecutive sectional titles snapped Saturday by No. 5 Brebeuf by a 9-5 score in the Class 3A sectional semifinal at Chatard.
Colby Jenkins hit a three-run homer to lead a sixth-inning rally by the Dragons and power the New Palestine offense in the defeat.
The Dragons finish the season with a 19-10 record, and having won the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.
The Braves hit three home runs in the game, including a two-run homer to take the lead in the second and a three-run shot in a five-run third to take a 7-1 advantage.
NP took an early lead when Braden Roberts singled in a run in the top of the first, but Brebeuf answered to built a 9-1 lead going into the sixth. Jenkins hit a three-run homer and Patrick Hopkins had an RBI to cap a four-run inning, but the Braves were able to prevent a further rally.
In addition to Jenkins’ homer, Roberts led the Dragons’ seven-hit attack, going 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Jason Hall-Manley was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs. James Crumlin had a hit and scored a run. Zach Lovell and Nick Ruche also had hits.
Zach Lovell (7-2) allowed seven hits and five earned runs over 2 2/3 innings. Jarret Jaques finished out the second, and Keegan Watson allowed two hits, two earned runs and struck out five over the final three innings.
The game was the final one for a big senior class that has won two sectional titles, a regional title and an HHC title in the last three seasons.
